What 爨 means
It is the compatibility form of 爨.
Taiwan’s CNS 11643 database assigns it to plane 5 at 7B7B. Unicode includes this block so CNS text can be converted to Unicode and back without losing that source position. In Mandarin, 爨 (cuàn) means cooking over fire or a hearth. The Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary completed around 100 CE, describes an older form as a cooking pot over a stove with fuel pushed into the fire. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education dictionary also records 爨 as a name for a people of eastern Yunnan, a term for short performances in Song- and Jin-period theatre, and a surname. Normalization maps 爨 to 爨; the standardized sequence 爨︀ (爨 plus UFE00) preserves the variant glyph.

Questions people ask
1Why does 爨 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
