What 直 means
It is the legacy form of 直.
Older 直 appears in Shang inscriptions carved on bones or turtle shells. A 2021 study reads some uses as “ritually proper”; today, Chinese and Japanese use it for “straight” or “direct,” Japanese also uses it in words for correcting, and Korean words written with Chinese characters use it for duty shifts.
Unicode added it in Unicode 3.1 (2001); its chart lists a Taiwan CNS 11643 source mapping.
Why does 直 become 直?
All four Unicode normalization forms map it to 直.
Text processing can erase its separate code point; Unicode defines a standardized variation sequence that preserves the glyph distinction.

Questions people ask
1Why does 直 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
