What 硎 means
It preserves the same Han character in a source-specific encoding.
Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992, a national Chinese-character encoding, assigns it to plane 3 entry T3-4333. Unicode keeps that entry recoverable when text is converted to Unicode and back.
The base character 硎 means “whetstone,” a stone for sharpening tools. In the Warring States-period classical Chinese text Zhuangzi, Cook Ding compares his well-used knife to one freshly sharpened on a whetstone. Unicode normalization can reduce 硎 to 硎; the standardized sequence 硎 UFE00 (Variation Selector-1) keeps the variant glyph distinct through normalization.

Questions people ask
1Why does 硎 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
