What 穏 means
It is a variant of 穏, not a separate word.
Unicode maps it to 穏 , whose Japanese meaning is “calm,” “quiet,” or “peace.” 穏 is the modern form of older 穩; the older character combines 禾 (“grain”) with 㥯 (a sound element), and an earlier sense described pressing down rice ears to gather grain before “calm” was borrowed.
Why does 穏 change to 穏?
Text normalization can rewrite it as 穏.
Unicode keeps the source character T7-3066 from Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 plane 7, used mainly for character variants, so conversions can round-trip without losing that source form.
The 穏 variation sequence uses 穏 followed by UFE00, a variation selector, to request this form.

Questions people ask
1Why does 穏 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
