What 繅 means
To preserve Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 character code. A separate Unicode mapping lets older records convert back without losing that code.
The Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi (說文解字), compiled around 100 CE, already records 繅; 繅 is a later encoding form, not a newly coined word.
Text normalization, a cleanup step that makes equivalent text consistent, turns 繅 into 繅. Unicode registers 繅︀—繅 followed by Variation Selector-1 —to request its variant in a supporting font.

Questions people ask
1Why does 繅 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
