What 芳 means
It is an encoded form of 芳, not a separate word. In Mandarin, 芳 (fāng) means fragrant plants or fragrance and can suggest virtue or a good reputation. Japanese uses 芳 as a kanji (character) read hō or kanbashii; Korean Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean) reads it bang, with senses such as fragrant or beautiful.
A form of 芳 appears in manuscripts from the ancient state of Chu, written on bamboo or silk slips. The Han-dynasty dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, completed around 100 CE, defines it as a fragrant plant. Chu poetry also uses fragrant plants to evoke worthy people, an image later extended to a lasting good reputation.
芳 is a text-encoding form. Unicode’s CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement was designed for round-trip conversion with Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 encoding standard, so text could be converted to that code set and back without losing separate source entries.

Questions people ask
1Will normalization keep 芳 distinct from 芳?
No. Unicode treats them as canonically equivalent, so normalization can replace 芳 with 芳 and erase the distinction. A standardized variation sequence, 芳 followed by UFE00 (U82B3 UFE00), can preserve the selected glyph through normalization.
