What 莭 means
Unicode maps 莭 to 莭 when text is normalized.
Unicode kept 莭 for conversion to and from Taiwan’s CNS 11643 character standard; its source is Plane 4, entry T4-3473. Normalization maps it to U83AD 莭. The sequence U83AD UFE00 uses invisible UFE00 to request the variant glyph, if a font supports it.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education lists 莭 as a variant of 節 in its 2024 dictionary. It cites the Jiyun, a Song-era rhyme dictionary compiled in 1037, and says 莭 is absent from the earlier Shuowen character dictionary.

Questions people ask
1Why does 莭 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
