What 虩 means
Read it as the older character 虩: fear or alarm.
The Han-era Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 虩 as fear and records “jumping spider” as a separate meaning. It also cites a line from the Book of Changes, a classic Chinese text. In another passage, the repeated form 虩虩 describes alarm at a sudden shock, followed by laughter.
Why does 虩 turn into 虩?
Unicode gives it a canonical mapping to 虩.
Unicode retains this variant for round-trip conversion with Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 character set. Normalization replaces 虩 with 虩. Use 虩 in ordinary prose; keep 虩 only when the distinct legacy code point itself must be preserved.

Questions people ask
1Why does 虩 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
