What 蠁 means
It is the compatibility form of 蠁.
The Han dynasty dictionary Shuowen Jiezi records 蠁 as an insect. The Song dynasty rhyme dictionary Guangyun, a pronunciation guide arranged by rhyme, describes a larva inside a pupa. A second Song dictionary, Jiyun, gives another sense: tiny flies around wine or vinegar jars, once believed to arise from the pale film there. Unicode maps 蠁 to 蠁, preserving Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 character encoding when text is converted to Unicode and back.
Does normalization of 蠁 change it?
NFKC and NFKD reduce it to 蠁.
NFC and NFD preserve 蠁. Use this distinct form when a legacy text must convert to Unicode and back; ordinary new writing uses 蠁.

Questions people ask
1Why does 蠁 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
