What 豕 means

It preserves CNS 11643’s separate position for two-way conversion.

Its CNS position is 6-292A. Unicode normalization turns 豕 into 豕, so that separate position can be lost.

How old is 豕?

The character appears on late Shang oracle bones.

A late Shang oracle-bone inscription—writing carved on bone for divination—shows 豕 drawn as a pig with bristles on its back; later bronze forms include picture-like and linear styles. Han-era Fangyan, a book of regional words, records pig names across ancient regions: 豭 in the regions it calls Northern Yan and Joseon, 彘 on both sides of the passes, and 豨 in Southern Chu. 豕 itself is another regional name.
