What 䳭 means
It preserves a character-set slot for round-trip conversion.
Taiwan's CNS 11643-1992 character standard records it at plane 4, position 5F37. Unicode retains that separate slot so conversion to and from the standard can preserve the source character. Its mapping is 䳭, not a second bird name or separate word.
The mapped character's history reaches much farther back. The Book of Songs writes the bird name as 脊令 in a verse about brothers hurrying to help one another; later dictionaries list 䳭 as a form of 鶺 in 鶺鴒, a name for wagtails. That bird-and-brother association belongs to the older word, not to a separate meaning for 䳭.
A legacy-code distinction, not a separate ordinary spelling.
Do not read its separate code point as a separate word.

Questions people ask
1Why does this character show as a box on Windows?
It is a font-coverage issue. As of 2026, Taiwan's CNS 11643 character database says Windows' default fonts do not include 䳭; a blank box does not mean the stored text changed.
