CJK Compatibility Ideograph F9BA

187/472

了 means the same as Chinese 了: it can mark a completed action or changed state. Its separate encoding preserves a legacy Korean character-set mapping; text normalization can turn it into 了.

Text symbol

What 了 means

It is an extra computer-encoded form of ordinary Chinese 了.

A 2008 language-history study traces 了’s written form to Shang-era oracle-bone inscriptions (carved on bones or shells for divination) and finds 了 in use by the Western Han. Earlier uses included “finish” and “understand”; later it also marked completed actions and changed states.

Does normalization change 了? Yes: a text-normalization step can turn it into 了, the ordinary form for new Chinese writing.

As of 2026, Han fonts can alter its display.

Use ordinary 了 in new Chinese writing; 了 serves legacy conversion.

Why does 了 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
