CJK Compatibility Ideograph-F9F7

248/472

立 is a legacy compatibility form of 立, the Han character for “stand” and “establish.” In Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text, the surrounding word determines its meaning and reading; this form mainly survives in older Korean-source data. Normalization may turn it into 立, while 立︀ can preserve the distinction.

Text symbol

What 立 means

It is a legacy form of 立, meaning “stand” or “establish.” The same Han character is used in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean writing. In Chinese, 立 can also mean to set something up, to exist, or, in some compounds, “immediately.” Japanese readings depend on the word; Korean Hanja—Chinese characters used in Korean—reads it as 립 or 입, as the word requires.

立’s shape predates its computer encoding: a character-evolution record traces it through oracle-bone, bronze, and small-seal writing, with the early form depicting a person standing on the ground. Oracle-bone writing, carved on bones and turtle shells for royal divination, is attested from the 14th–11th century BCE. Unicode encodes 立 as K0-6D21, a duplicate from Korea’s KS C 5601/KS X 1001 character-set standards, so older data can round-trip without losing its source entry.

Why does 立 turn into 立?

Normalization can turn 立 into 立. Unicode treats this compatibility form and 立 as equivalent for normalization, so text processing may replace the former with the latter and erase the source-form distinction. The standardized sequence 立︀—立 followed by Variation Selector-1—preserves that distinction through normalization. Use it when the exact legacy form must remain; ordinary text generally uses 立.

An unsupported font or text system may substitute 立 or show a missing-glyph box. Regional CJK fonts can also render the base character with different shapes. The display can change while the character’s core meaning stays the same, so a visual mismatch alone does not tell you which form the text contains.

Technical and archival: it marks a preserved source-encoding distinction.

Use 立 for ordinary text; keep 立 only where the legacy form matters.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 立 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
