CJK Compatibility Ideograph FA03

260/472

糖 means the same as 糖: sugar, candy, or sweets. It is a compatibility form kept for a distinct Korean legacy-encoding entry; ordinary writing uses 糖. Unicode normalization can turn 糖 into 糖, while the standardized sequence 糖︀ preserves a glyph variant.

Text symbol

What 糖 means

No: 糖 means sugar, like 糖.

The older character 糖 appears in the Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary, with the meaning “malt sugar.” Its traditional analysis connects 米, the grain or rice element, with 唐 as the sound-bearing element. The meaning later widened to candy and sugar. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese writing use 糖, each with its own reading.

Why was FA03 encoded separately?

To preserve a distinction in a Korean legacy encoding.

FA03 is a CJK compatibility ideograph: a code point kept for compatibility with an older standard. Korean standard KS X 1001:1998 maps source K0-7738 to 糖; retaining FA03 lets text converted from that standard round-trip with its source distinction intact. FA03's origin is an encoding decision, not the origin of the much older sugar character.

Will normalization change 糖?

Yes: Unicode normalization can turn it into 糖.

The two are canonically equivalent, so normalization can change the stored character even when the font draws 糖 and 糖 alike. Their outlines alone cannot prove which code point is present.

The Unicode 18.0 chart lists 糖︀ as the standardized variation sequence for this glyph: 糖 followed by the invisible variation selector UFE00. The selector requests a glyph variant and remains through normalization.

Technical and archival: 糖 preserves an exact legacy-encoding distinction, not a different meaning of sugar.

Use 糖 for ordinary writing; normalization can turn 糖 into 糖.
