What 輻 means
It stands for 輻, the Han character for a wheel spoke.
An early Chinese dictionary 說文解字 defines 輻 as the radial bar joining a wheel's hub to its rim.
Unicode included 輻 in 1993 to preserve distinctions from older character sets during conversion. It is a later encoding form, not an independently invented ancient sign.
Why does 輻 turn into 輻?
Because Unicode normalization maps it to 輻.
Unicode's normalization rules map 輻 to 輻. This is a canonical mapping, so NFC and NFD can erase the distinction, as can NFKC and NFKD.
For routine writing, use 輻 or, in simplified Chinese, 辐. The exact form matters when preserving a source spelling or checking a conversion path.
Technical or archival: keeping this form signals exact-source preservation, not a different tone.
Normalization can replace 輻 with 輻.

1Why is 輻 a box?
It can be. In an app using a font without this glyph, a blank box may stand in for 輻. The box is a rendering placeholder, not part of the text.
