What 塀 means
It is an older Japanese form of 塀, meaning fence or wall.
This old Japanese fence character marks an outdoor boundary around a house or site. It is said to have been created in Japan for that use: 土 means “earth,” and 屛 means “screen” while also supplying the sound. A report also places it in 龍龕手鑑, a Chinese character dictionary from the 10th century; its exact origin remains unsettled.
A legacy Japanese text form; ordinary writing uses 塀.
Use 塀 when the exact source form matters; otherwise write 塀.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 塀 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
