What 節 means
Read 節 as 節, not as a separate word.
The underlying character 節 is old: it appears in inscriptions on bronze objects and writing from China's Warring States era, when rival states fought for power. An early Japanese chronicle called the Nihon Shoki uses it for a joint around 720. Recorded meanings include a bamboo node or joint, a section or season, a festival, restraint in spending, and integrity.
Why does 節 preserve a Japanese form?
It keeps a Japanese source's glyph distinction during conversion.
The Japanese character standard JIS X 0213:2000 includes this form. Unicode retained it so conversion between that standard and Unicode can preserve the source character. FA56 maps to unified 節; it is not an ordinary alternate spelling.
The standardized variation sequence 節︀ (節 followed by UFE00) can request the Japanese glyph; FE00 is an invisible variation selector. If a text system does not support the sequence, it may ignore FE00 and show the default 節 glyph.
Technical and font-sensitive: it preserves a Japanese source distinction rather than serving as an everyday alternate spelling.
If someone sends it, read it as 節 unless the text is preserving a Japanese source glyph.

1Why does 節 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
