What 者 means
No: 者 is an old-form Japanese variant of 者. It means “person” or “one who”; in Classical Chinese it can also serve as a grammatical particle. Modern Japanese uses 者 in compounds such as 作者 (“author”) and 読者 (“reader”).
The older character 者 has a long Chinese record: it appears in inscriptions cast on bronze objects, manuscripts from the ancient state of Chu, and small-seal script, an early Chinese writing style; it is also recorded in Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary.
者 is a later Japanese standards form. JIS X 0213:2000, a Japanese character-encoding standard, maps slot 3-7A44 to it so older Japanese text can preserve the distinction when converted.
In Japanese text, 者 is an old-form choice for source-faithful or historical writing.
Why does 者 become 者? Compatibility normalization can replace it with 者.

1Why does 者 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
