CJK Compatibility Ideograph FA6B

364/472

恵 preserves the Japanese broadcast distinction between 惠 and 恵, forms of a kanji meaning kindness or favor. ARIB used it to keep that form when converting text to Unicode and back. Use 恵 in ordinary Japanese; normalization can turn 恵 into 恵 and erase the distinction.

Text symbol

What 恵 means

It preserves a Japanese broadcast distinction. ARIB STD-B24, Japan’s digital-broadcasting standard, used 恵 to keep 惠 distinct from 恵 in Unicode conversions. Unicode maps it to 恵, so normalization can erase that distinction.

A scroll of the Buddhist sutra 賢愚経, attributed to Emperor Shōmu and dated to the eighth century, contains 恵. The Japanese character dictionary 新撰字鏡 records both forms around 899–901.

Technical and archival: it marks Japanese broadcast or legacy-encoding data.

Use 恵 only to preserve ARIB text; normalization can turn it into 恵.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 恵 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
