What 廙 means
It carries the meaning of 廙, not a separate word. The older character’s dictionary senses include a traveling house or movable tent, and “respectful.” These meanings belong to 廙, rather than being new meanings of the compatibility form.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, glosses 廙 as a “traveling house”; the rhyme dictionary Guangyun records the sense “respectful.” FA83 is a source form from KPS 10721-2000. Unicode kept it so conversion to and from that set could preserve the source character.
Why can 廙 turn into 廙?
Normalization can fold 廙 to 廙. The two forms have a canonical mapping, so text-normalizing software can replace the compatibility character with its unified counterpart. Unicode’s standardized variation sequence—廙 followed by UFE00—preserves the distinction through normalization. A font still needs to support the sequence to show its intended glyph.
Technical and archival; it marks an encoding distinction rather than a conversational tone.
