CJK Compatibility Ideograph FAA4

419/472

瘝 is a legacy encoding form of 瘝, whose classical Chinese senses include illness, suffering, and leaving an official duty unattended. New text normally uses 瘝; keep 瘝 when exact source identity or round-trip conversion matters. A box can mean missing font support, and normalization can change it to 瘝.

Text symbol

What 瘝 means

It preserves the same character under a separate code point.

Read 瘝 as 瘝. In classical Chinese, this character means illness, pain, or suffering; as a verb, it can mean leaving an official duty unattended. FAA4 adds an encoding distinction, not another word or social meaning.

For new writing, use 瘝. Retain 瘝 when an older source’s exact character choice must survive a conversion; Unicode normalization can turn it into 瘝.

The character predates its encoding

瘝 appears in the Book of Documents, a classical Chinese text: one passage uses it for illness, another for leaving an official post unattended. A later Chinese agricultural work uses the character for the people’s suffering.

The separate compatibility form supports round-trip conversion with Korean KPS 10721-2000. Unicode also defines 瘝︀ as a standardized variation sequence for this alternate form; its invisible selector asks a supporting font to display the legacy glyph.

Classical Chinese in meaning; a legacy form in modern encoding.

Questions people ask

3

Why does FAA4 turn into 瘝?

Normalization can do that: Unicode treats FAA4 as equivalent to 瘝 and can replace one with the other. Preserve the original code point when a round-trip must retain the source’s character choice.

Why is FAA4 missing in my font?

The font may not include this rare glyph, and the text app may have no suitable fallback. Try a CJK font that includes the form; a missing glyph does not mean the input failed.

Should I use FAA4 in new text?

Usually no. Use 瘝 for new writing; retain FAA4 when a legacy source or round-trip conversion requires its exact character choice.
