CJK Compatibility Ideograph FAB6

437/472

襁 is a compatibility form of 襁, a Han character for the cloth band used to carry a child; 襁褓 means swaddling clothes and can also mean infancy. Use 襁 for new writing, and keep 襁 only when exact source encoding matters because normalization can replace it.

What 襁 means

Yes. 襁 is a compatibility form mapped to 襁.

The Han character 襁 names a woven band used to carry a child on someone's back. In 襁褓, the pair refers to swaddling clothes and can also mean infancy.

An Eastern Han (25–220 CE) entry in the Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, explains 襁 as clothing for carrying a child. Its commentary also records an older spelling of the paired term, 繈緥: this word family developed over time rather than being invented as a new computer symbol.

Why does 襁 exist?

It preserves an older source encoding.

Unicode's FA70–FAD9 range preserves round-trip compatibility with North Korea's KPS 10721-2000 source standard. Its table identifies 襁 as KP1-7451 and maps it to 襁. In Japan, 襁褓 appears in a reference record from 872; a 1712 encyclopedia describes its use as a baby's diaper cloth and mentions a childbirth-gift custom. These records connect the older textile term with infancy.

Use 襁 for new writing; keep 襁 when exact source encoding matters.

Why does 襁 change to 襁?

Normalization may replace 襁 with 襁.

A normalization or conversion step can replace the compatibility code point with 襁. This changes the encoded form, not the word's reading or meaning.

If it appears as a missing-glyph marker, the code point may be intact while the active font or fallback lacks a usable glyph. Han characters can also have different font designs without changing character identity.

Technical and archival: it belongs in preserved source data.

For new Chinese text, choose 襁; 襁 may normalize away or appear missing in some fonts.

Why does 襁 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 襁 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
