What 變 means
It is a compatibility form of 變, not a separate meaning. Unicode maps FAC0 to 變 and includes it for round-trip conversion with KPS 10721-2000, a Korean character-encoding standard, so legacy data can be converted without losing this form. In new writing, use 變 in traditional Chinese, 变 in simplified Chinese, or 変 in Japanese.
The recognisable 變 form appears in early Warring States bronze inscriptions around 400 BCE. Later forms are recorded in the seal-script tradition of the early Chinese dictionary 說文解字 and in clerical writing from the Eastern Han. An older dictionary gloss is ‘to alter’; later Chinese uses include variation, transformation, disturbance, or rebellion. Japanese reference usage also includes ‘unusual’ and a musical flat.
Why does 變 turn into 變?
Compatibility normalization can replace 變 with 變. Unicode’s compatibility decomposition maps FAC0 to 變, so normalization can remove its original code-point identity. Unicode also defines the sequence 變︀ (變 followed by variation selector 1, UFE00) to request this compatibility glyph. Preserve the original text or that sequence when exact identity matters.
A font without FAC0 coverage may show a box; fonts made for different Chinese and Japanese regions can also draw Han characters differently. That changes the display, not the encoded character.
Technical and archival: it signals preserved text data, not conversational emphasis.
For new writing, use your language’s ordinary form; normalization may replace 變 with 變.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 變 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
