What ⺿ means
It marks a grass-related component, not a standalone word.
艸 is the older full grass character. A Han-era dictionary, Shuowen Jiezi, analyzes it as two sprout-shaped signs (屮). Oracle-bone and bronze records preserve earlier grass forms. In character dictionaries, the grass radical helps index entries; its plant clue can also point to plant types, parts, properties, or uses.
Technical and lexicographic: it labels a grass-related character component in reference material, not a conversational message.
Do not use ⺿ in ordinary text as a substitute for the grass component 艹.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ⺿ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Radicals Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
