What ⻒ means
It marks the left-side form of the “long” radical. A radical is a component dictionaries use to group entries; radical–stroke indexes then sort by remaining strokes. Unicode links ⻒ to Kangxi Radical 168 and the component form 镸. In the Eastern Han, Xu Shen’s dictionary Shuowen Jiezi grouped characters by components; the later Kangxi Dictionary used its radical list.
Technical notation for radical indexes, not everyday writing.
In a word, use the language’s normal written form; ⻒ marks an index component.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⻒ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Radicals Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
