What ⺓ means
It marks the thread radical used to index Han characters.
A radical is a dictionary filing label based on a recurring written part. The Kangxi system is a traditional Chinese character index; ⺓ is its thread-form variant, while ordinary text uses 幺.
Early Chinese inscriptions on bones and bronze vessels show 幺 as a thread-like form. Later dictionaries also gloss 幺 as small, faint, or young; those word meanings are not a standalone reading of ⺓.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⺓ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
