What 𠘇 means
It links this character to an older salt-making term. A lexicon from the Ming period lists 𠘇; the Kangxi Dictionary later identifies it with 𠘢. That form carries the gloss “boiling salt”: heating brine until salt remains.
Why can UTF-16 split a character?
Some older software treats its UTF-16 pair as two units. Unicode treats 𠘇 as one character, but UTF-16 stores it in two 16-bit units called a surrogate pair. Code that does not recognize such pairs can miscount or split it.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𠘇 show as a box or look different?
Your font or app may lack the glyph, and fonts can draw it differently. In September 2026, display still depended on support in the installed software and font; a fallback box does not change the character.
