What 𢀜 means
It means “to embrace” or “hug.”
It names the action of holding someone or something close.
A Qing-era regional source also records a sense for something swollen or uneven; use that reading only when the historical or regional context supports it.
Where did 𢀜 come from?
It appears in late Western Zhou bronze inscriptions.
These are texts cast on bronze objects.
Shuowen Jiezi, an old Chinese dictionary, says 丮 points to the meaning of holding while 工 contributes sound. Later seal script, a historical Chinese writing style, and handwritten forms show the character's shape changing.
How does 𢀜 relate to 巩 and 㧬?
Some are recorded variants; others are components in the traditional analysis.
㧬 is recorded as a hand-radical variant for the same historical Chinese word. Shuowen Jiezi describes 𢭤 as 𢀜 with 手, the Chinese hand component, added.
In that traditional analysis, 丮 contributes meaning and 工 contributes sound. These connections do not make the characters interchangeable.
Archaic and specialist: expect it in historical sources or work on old Chinese writing.
Don't replace it with 巩 without checking context: in simplified Chinese, that character also represents 鞏.
