Variant form of 保

13245/42720

𣎼 is a historical variant associated with Chinese 保 (Mandarin bǎo), “care for, protect, preserve”; some Taiwanese references also file it under 呆, “dazed/foolish.” Use ordinary 保 or 呆 in modern writing according to the word you mean. 保’s early shape shows an adult carrying a child, an image tied to its older sense of raising and caring.

What 𣎼 means

It is a historical variant of 保. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education lists it as a form of 保, the Chinese character for caring for, protecting, and preserving. 保 appears in oracle-bone inscriptions from China’s Shang dynasty, carved on animal bones and turtle shells, and later on bronze vessels. Its early shape depicts an adult carrying a child; the first sense was raising and caring, later extended to guarding and preserving. Those ancient images are of 保, not evidence that this exact printed glyph 𣎼 appeared on them.

Is 𣎼 保 or 呆?

Some Taiwanese dictionaries list it under both. A 2024 entry in Taiwan’s Ministry of Education character-variants dictionary files 𣎼 under 保 and 呆. The older Kangxi Dictionary, another Chinese character reference, warns that using this shape for “foolish” is mistaken. In modern Chinese, write 保 for care or protection and 呆 for dazed or foolish; this historical graph can leave your intended word unclear.

A historical dictionary form, best kept for reference or carefully preserved text; modern Chinese uses 保 or 呆 according to meaning.

In a modern message, use 保 or 呆 as intended; 𣎼 can leave the word unclear.
