Variant of 咫

14666/42720

𣥉 is a rare written variant of Chinese 咫 (zhǐ). The Han-dynasty dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, presented in 121 CE, says that under the Zhou system, 咫 measured eight cun, a traditional Chinese length unit, based on a woman’s hand. 咫 later also meant “near” or “short,” as in 咫尺 (“close at hand”). The Song-dynasty rhyme dictionary Jiyun records this variant.

What 𣥉 means

Yes. 𣥉 is a documented written variant of 咫 (zhǐ).

This form keeps 咫’s 尺, the traditional character for a measuring stick, but changes the component that hints at sound. It is still a variant of the same character, not a new meaning.

Why does 𣥉 show as a box?

If a font that lacks this glyph is used, the rendering system may show a box as a placeholder. The text still represents the same variant of 咫; the box is not another character.
