Líng (Mandarin reading)

15162/42720

𣬹 is an old Chinese character read líng, for long, knotted hair or wool. In the Zhouli, a classical handbook of royal offices and rites, the related spelling 泠 describes sheep whose tangled fleece makes the meat smell strong. Its CJK Extension B glyph needs font support.

What 𣬹 means

It describes hair or fleece left knotted and uncombed.

The Kangxi Dictionary (1716) says 𣬹 can stand for 泠 and cites the Guangyun, compiled in 1008, for líng; it also gives lián as a second historical reading.

In the Zhouli's royal-kitchen rule, commentators read 泠毛 as long wool and 毳 as wool gathered in knots; this coat marks the meat as strong-smelling.
