𣻢 (water sound)

16099/42720

In Mandarin, 𣻢 is read tōng and means “the sound of water”; the right-hand part 通 supplies the sound. A 1624 edition of the Ming story collection Jingshi Tongyan uses it in 撲𣻢地跳入奉符縣河裏去了, describing a jump into a river with a splash. Mandarin also uses 撲通 (pūtōng; simplified 扑通) for a thud or splash.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𣻢 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
