What 𣻲 means
It is a variant of 淄, read zī in Mandarin.
The Song-era Chinese sound dictionary Jiyun records 𣻲 as a customary way to write 淄 in the 11th century. A sound dictionary groups characters by pronunciation and rhyme; this entry treats 𣻲 as another written form of the same character.
Why does 淄 also mean “to blacken”?
淄 names a river and also has a verb sense: “to blacken.”
A Chinese dictionary called Yùpiān described 淄 as “a river name” in 543. The history book Shiji uses it in 涅而不淄: something exposed to black dye yet not blackened. Another classical book, Liezi, tells how the cook Yi Ya tasted where the Zi and Mian rivers met and distinguished their waters.

1Why does 𣻲 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
