What 𧅀 means
A square stem, paired leaves, and white flowers.
Tang-era Bencao Shiyi, a medicinal-plant book, gives the description. Li Shizhen’s 16th-century herbal Bencao Gangmu identifies the plant as 益母草; earlier authorities disagreed. The entry says young shoots were edible, explaining 菜 (“vegetable”) in 𧅀菜. This form is absent from the early Shuowen Jiezi dictionary. Its Mandarin reading is cán.
