Han character 𧻀

32449/42720

𧻀 is an old Chinese character with dictionary senses of pushing back and standing with the foot angled. It is written text, not an emoji; if it appears as a box, the font may lack its glyph.

What 𧻀 means

Several old dictionary glosses exist; context selects the sense.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Education gives the Taiwanese Mandarin reading qiè. Variant 䞣 appears on bamboo slips from the Qin period in China—thin strips used for writing. Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE during the Han dynasty, glosses 𧻀 as “keep at a distance” and cites an order from the Han dynasty. Later lexicons add “stand with the foot tilted” and “crooked, contrary.”

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𧻀 show as a box?

The font cannot draw 𧻀. A font with wider Han-character coverage may; the box marks a missing glyph, not another form.
