What 𨈭 means
Use hexadecimal Unicode input, or try a Chinese method that indexes it. In a Unicode-aware editor, enter U2822D with its hexadecimal input command. The Taiwan CNS 11643 entry lists Mandarin dān (roughly “dahn,” held at a high, level tone) and Cangjie code HHGB; Cangjie is a shape-based Chinese input method. These options work only if your input method includes this rare variant.
A font may still fail to display the character: CJK Extension B support varies. The 2024 CNS 11643 listing says relevant default fonts in Windows 10 and later include this glyph.
What does 𨈭 mean?
It is a rare written variant of 聃. Mandarin reads 聃 as dān, roughly “dahn” on a high, steady tone. It can describe large, long ears and is also recorded as Laozi’s courtesy name, a traditional adult byname. The expanded Yùpiān, an early Chinese dictionary of characters and their meanings, calls 𨈭 a nonstandard form of 聃. Its written form swaps 聃’s ear component for the body component while keeping the same reading.
A Sui-dynasty history text uses 𨈭牟羅, a written form of Tamna, the polity on Jeju Island. Other historical records spell the same place name 躭羅, 躭牟羅, or 耽羅. Here 𨈭 transcribes a place name; its ear-related meaning does not carry over.
