What 𨏽 means
It grew from a tool name to tracks, sound, and wordplay. The Western Han (an ancient Chinese dynasty) regional glossary 方言 records the related word 轣轆車 for a wheel used to wind silk thread in Zhao and Wei, ancient states; for the same tool it gives a different name, 道軌, farther east in Qi and Haidai. Song and Yuan poems use 轣轆 for the rolling rattle of wheels. During the Ming era, a wordbook records a figurative sense, “deceit,” by linking the Chinese words for “wheel track” and “devious course,” which sound alike.
