What 𨛬 means
A locality in Wenxi, in historic Hedong. The Han-era Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi parses 𨛬 as 邑 (“settlement”) plus 非, a sound element. A Qing-era note tells one Pei surname-origin story: descendants of Boyi, a figure in ancient Chinese tradition, took the place’s name; after a new land grant, the story says 邑 changed to 衣 (“clothing”), forming 裴. The note says 裴 had replaced 𨛬.
