What 𨨽 means
Old dictionaries connect it with two different characters. Taiwan’s 2024 Ministry of Education variant dictionary lists 𨨽 as a variant of 鎩. The 1716 Kangxi Dictionary cites the earlier dictionary Lei Pian for “same as 鍛,” meaning “to forge metal.”
Jia Yi’s Western Han essay on Qin’s fall contrasts farm tools with a long spear called 鎩. The Han text Huainanzi uses 鎩 for damaged wings; the fifth-century poet Bao Zhao preserves 鎩羽 (“injured wings”). This is 鎩’s injury sense, not proof that 𨨽 replaces 鎩 in every compound.

1Why does 𨨽 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
