What 𨸚 means
The glyph stands for 級 (jí): “step,” “level,” or “rank.”
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE, explains 級 as the order of silk threads. The meaning later broadened to stair steps and social rank.
One proposed ancestor appears in Shang oracle-bone inscriptions, carved on animal bones or turtle shells (c. 1600–1100 BCE); its use is uncertain. The Longkan Shoujian (997), a character dictionary, and the Jiyun (1039), a Chinese rhyme dictionary that groups words by sound, record the variant; Jiyun glosses it as steps or ranks. The Korean Yangmu Wonjong Gongsinrok, a register of awards for people who helped suppress the Yi In-jwa rebellion (1728), also preserves the glyph; this Hanja text (Chinese characters used in Korean writing) groups recipients by rank. This edition was issued in 1764.
How do I type 𨸚?
In English-language Word for Windows, type 28E1A, then press AltX.
As of September 2026, French and German editions use AltC. If a hexadecimal digit comes immediately before the code, select just the five-character code before converting it.
This is mainly a historical and dictionary form; ordinary Chinese writing uses 級 in traditional Chinese or 级 in simplified Chinese.
For a current Chinese sentence, use 級 or 级 unless the historical form 𨸚 itself matters.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𨸚 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Unified Ideographs Extension B block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
