Chinese Pit Character

36519/42720

𨺦 is a Chinese character for a pit or hollow. If it turns into a box, the font in use may not cover this rare Han character.

Text symbol

What 𨺦 means

It names a ground hollow and is read sǒu. The Jiyun (1039), a Chinese dictionary that groups characters by rhyme (shared ending sounds), records it as sǒu and glosses it with 阬, “pit.” The later Kangxi Dictionary, another Chinese reference book, keeps that sense. Traditional analysis treats 阜 (a mound or terrain element) as the meaning clue and 叜 as the sound clue.
