What 𩺺 means
It names a porpoise in Chinese, but a carp in Vietnamese Nôm. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education character-variant dictionary lists 𩺺 as an alternate written form of 鱀. The base character appears in the Erya, an early Chinese dictionary traditionally dated around the 3rd century BCE; its fish section explains the name with another fish character, 鱁.
In Vietnamese chữ Nôm, a Han-character writing system for Vietnamese, 𩺺 writes gáy in cá gáy, a name for carp. During the Ming dynasty, Li Shizhen’s Bencao Gangmu, a compendium of natural history and medicine, lists 鱀 among names for river dolphins, including “river pig” and “water pig.” Reference glosses vary between finless porpoise and baiji (the Chinese river dolphin), so the old Chinese name does not identify one modern species.
