What 𪁢 means
It is an alternate written form for an old marsh-bird name.
The Erya, an early Chinese glossary, lists 鶭 as 澤虞 (zé yú), literally “marsh warden.” The Shuowen Jiezi, an early character dictionary, records 䲱 for this bird-name and analyzes it as 鳥 (“bird”) plus 方 for sound.
A Jin-era note by scholar Guo Pu describes a dark, water-owl-like bird that stays in marshes and calls when people approach. The watchful behavior explains the later “field-protecting bird” gloss.
Why does 𪁢 show up as a box?
A font may not contain a drawing for this rare character.
When that happens, the text can still contain 𪁢 even though the active font shows a missing-character box. Switching to a font with broader CJK coverage may reveal it.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𪁢 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Unified Ideographs Extension B block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
