What 𪁳 means
In Vietnamese chữ Nôm, 𪁳 writes trả, “kingfisher.”
The bird is called chim trả in Vietnamese. Chữ Nôm was a historical writing system for Vietnamese that adapted Chinese characters and created new forms; it took shape across centuries rather than from one inventor.
Here, trả names the bird, not the common modern verb trả (“return/pay”).
Why does 𪁳 have two readings?
The language tradition changes the reading.
Vietnamese Hán-Nôm records map it to trả; Taiwan’s CNS11643 record lists mǒu as a Mandarin reading. Those are readings from separate language traditions, not two options for one word.
