What 𪂢 means
They became signs of formal exchange and correspondence. Related goose forms appear in Chu manuscripts from the Warring States, when rival states ruled China. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses 鴈 as a goose.
Classical ritual texts describe geese as gifts exchanged in greetings and marriage. In a Han story, the Han envoy Su Wu is held by the Xiongnu, a steppe power north of China. A Han messenger claims a goose carried a silk note revealing Su Wu’s location; the ruse helps win his release and later links geese with letters.

1Why does 𪂢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
