What 𪅂 means
It is a regional bird name. The medieval rhyme dictionary Guangyun (1008) records Wu speakers in eastern China calling it 𪅂渠 (“water chicken”). The Qing bird catalogue Qinding Niaopu also lists 𪅂鸡 and 章渠.
A Qing-era note links 𪅂渠 to 䳋渠 in the Shan Hai Jing (“Classic of Mountains and Seas”), describing a black, red-legged, pheasant-like bird. This is a historical identification, not a sure species match.
As of 2026, a Chinese dictionary lists it as a word for a water bird in Jianghuai Mandarin, a regional variety of Chinese.
