What 𪈍 means

Read it as the quail character 鵪. In Mandarin, 鵪 is pronounced ān; 鵪鶉 is the familiar word for quail.

The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, describes 䨄 as a kind of bird and gives 䳺 as an older form written with the bird element. The Longkan Shoujian, a Buddhist dictionary compiled in 997 to help readers interpret Buddhist texts, records 𪈍 as a quail name. The Kangxi Dictionary, a later Chinese character reference, also gives that bird reading; a Taiwan Ministry of Education review identifies this shape as a copying error from another spelling of the same word.

1

Why does 𪈍 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
