The Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese dictionary completed by scholar Xu Shen before 100 CE, records 𪓨 as a form of 鼂 and glosses 鼂 as the insect name 匽鼂. Later classical writing uses 鼂 for 朝 (“morning”) and in surnames written 鼂 or 晁. The Kangxi Dictionary cites the earlier Yu Pian, another character dictionary, calling 𪓨 an old form of 鼂.
