What 𪓽 means
𪓽 is a written variant of 鼉, the Chinese alligator. Traditional Chinese uses 鼉; simplified Chinese writes the same character as 鼍.
The standard form 鼉 appears in early inscriptions carved on oracle bones and bronze vessels. The Kangxi Dictionary (1716) cites the reference work Zihui Bu for 𪓽 and quotes the Yi Zhou Shu, an old Chinese text listing the animal among goods Kuaiji sent as tribute.
What is a 鼉鼓?
鼉鼓 is the Chinese alligator drum, covered with the animal’s hide. Neolithic period (late Stone Age) sites in China have yielded drums with Yangtze alligator skin for the drumhead. The Classic of Poetry, a Chinese collection of poems, describes these drums booming while blind musicians perform for a Zhou king.
