What 𪔪 means
It names the silent state of a drum. The earliest known dictionary record for this word is in the Eastern Han Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE. It defines 𪔪 as “a drum without sound.”
The entry analyzes the character as 鼓 (“drum”) plus 咠, a component that hints at pronunciation. Taiwan’s CNS11643 character database lists two Mandarin readings for 𪔪: qì and tiè.
Can 𪔪 mean a lingering sound?
Yes, as an alternate dictionary gloss. The Kangxi Dictionary (1716) quotes the Zhengzitong, another Chinese character dictionary, for a second explanation: the drum has stopped, but its last sound still lingers. This reading shifts the emphasis from silence itself to the faint sound left after a beat.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𪔪 display as a box?
A font is the likely issue. As of 2026-09-27, Taiwan’s CNS11643 database says Windows 10 and later include 𪔪 in their default MingLiU and DFKai-SB fonts. Another app can still show a box if its selected font lacks this glyph.
